The author refutes a 1967 AMA Journal editorial position that “the contemporary physician sees suicide as a manifestation of emotional illness. Rarely does he view it in a context other than that of psychiatry.” The implication that this view of suicide is scientifically accurate & morally uplifting is debated vigorously. This position on suicide is said to be both erroneous & evil through treating an act as if it were a happening & legitimizing psychiatric force under the guise of treatment.
