Special Groups of Particular Concern to Suicidologists (IN: Suicide: The Gamble With Death, by Gene Lester and David Lester)

Some subgroups, such as adolescents, Blacks, & American Indians have particularly serious suicide problems which differ from the population as a whole. Adolescent suicide relates to problems of controlling sexual impulses, achieving sexual identity & self esteem. Unemployment & family relationships affect suicidal behavior of Black youth. High suicide rates of Indians have been blamed on loss of self esteem & a breakdown in cultural ways of dealing with aggression. 12 Refs. (LH)
