Describes a way of thinking about & intervening in family emergencies that maximize therapist leverage & effectiveness with highly stressed & difficult families. The first phase of the interview assesses the emergency & the family system in preparation for phase 2, problem solving, which can consist of crisis intervention, social systems brokering, &/or therapy consultation. Flexible use of systems & strategic principles enhance the practice of emergency psychiatry. Case examples are included.
