Describes a study in which 40 patients who were preoccupied with thoughts of suicide, had attempted suicide, & were diagnosed with severe depression were treated with antidepressant drugs & psychotherapy. 6 response stages to drug treatment were observed among the patients, including a paradoxical stage when patients show an increased desire for suicide in spite of a favorable initial response to treatment.
