In the epidemiologic study of morbidity and mortality three areas of research include: time, person, and place. Some information in all 3 areas is available on the standard U.S. death certificate. Definitions of time, demographic variables and description of place are followed by a summation of suicide rates since 1950. The Centers for Disease Control are co-ordinating the improvement of the operational criteria for the classification of suicide. New research questions are posed.
