A 1980 study by the U.S. Department of Justice found that the suicide rate of adolescents in jails was 8.6 per 100,000 compared to the national adolescent suicide rate of 2.7 per 100,000. Staff need to be trained to recognize the signs of suicide & to respond appropriately. The paper details an agency policy that promotes suicide prevention education & training for staff & clients. This includes: screening clients, suicide watch, documentation, training, community resources & media response.
