The methodology of identifying & examining countertransference responses in psychiatric institutions is discussed. Aspects of an institutional analysis is presented. It is suggested that what is needed is a shared intrastaff interpretative stance, criteria for which include protection of personal privacy, sustainment of the treatment task as a primary focus, development of both a treatment ethos or culture and self-reflection on the part of each staff member.
