The authors compiled a suicide questionaire & a symptom check-list & analysed the responses of those who were close to 50 successive South African Indian suicide victims in the greater Durban area (Deaths 1982-84). In most cases, major depression & alcohol abuse were noted. Hanging was the most common method, followed by ingestion of toxic substances. Cultural differences were found between this sample & those in the existing literature. KM
