In 1986, the 18-35 year old chronically mentally ill population is now mainly living a de-institutionalized life. This raises new issues for psychiatric nursing care. Characteristics of individuals in this population include suicidal gestures. The author delineates characteristics of the group including differences to the earlier institutionalized chronically mentally ill, offers nursing interventions & treatment plans.
