A suicidal gesture was made by an adolescent daughter, who was an adopted only child. The course of psychoanalytical treatment is outlined. The suicidal gesture was pivotal in the treatment process. The significance of an “audience” or a perceptive listener for greater self-awareness is illustrated by parallels to the theatre.
