The common assumption that the prevalence of mental disorders has been increasing with time is only partially justified. The increased demand for psychiatric & psychotherapeutic services is related to changes in the age composition of the population & the enormous increase in life expectancy. While rates of schizophrenia have remained stable for decades, the rates of relevant forms of deviant behavior such as suicide show variation with values in society. (DLD)
