Presented are principles about self destructive behavior, learned from observations of the suicidal, that may enable the professional or non-professional to intervene in a crisis and prevent suicide. Addressed are general principles of intervention, some essentials in the method of intervention, qualities necessary in the caregiver, difficulties faced in a crisis situation, telephone services, approaches to the suicidal, and recommendations from suicidologists for intervention.(NBB)
