Information was collected on 163 suicide attempters; 65.8% of the patients had a history of attempts. Male repeaters were more likely than men with no suicide history to have left school before ninth grade, to abuse alcohol, & to have family stress. Female repeaters were younger than 1st cases & reported more difficulties with sexual adjustment & loneliness. A 6 mo. followup indicated 4 suicides in the repeaters’ group & none in the 1st cases’ group. Repeaters present a high short-term risk.
