120 people at a shopping mall completed a questionnaire after reading 1 of 5 fictitious newspaper articles about a young child. 1 significant finding was that families in which children exhibited suicidal behaviors, whether an unsuccessful attempt, a suicide with no previous attempt, or a suicide with previous attempts, were judged to be more in need of help from a mental health professional than families in which a child died accidentally or from a viral illness.
