Presented are first results of a longitudinal study on the epidemiology of suicide in Upper Austria in 1977-84, which focuses on national & regional differences. INformation was acqired as to sex, age, marital status, profession, date & method of suicide. In 2536 cases of suicide, some findings to date include: an average of 317 suicides per yr.; male/female rates of 37.4 & 13.4 per 100,000; a raate twice the national rate in Steyr (pop. 40,000); highest rates among divorced males & unemployed.
