The WHO focused its attention in youth & adolescents who have not previously received a great amount of attention because they are a relatively healthy group. However, 3 factors require attention: an earlier menarche in females, accelerated urbanization, & a youth population explosion. Suicide & attempted suicide have increased in developed countries since 1965. Services are needed that ensure confidentiality, provide easy access, are low cost, & demonstrate an attitude of acceptance of youth.
