An effective crisis intervention which can be accessed by as many patients as possible within a reasonable timeframe & which utilizes existing institutional facilities is evaluated. A sample of 50 attempters were treated by routine psychotherapy & a like sample were treated with short-term psychotherapy using eclectic methods. It was found that short-term therapy is applicable to a minority of suicide attempters; substance abusers & psychotics do not appear to benefit. (NBB)
