A shift away from the impermissive view of suicide actually consists of a modification, not a change. It is becoming less rigid & more complex. Exceptions are now recognized where none were before. “Self deliverance” has been accepted by many as a humane, morally responsible adjustment in societal attitudes. Hypothetically comparing 2 societies–one that accepts suicide & one that does not–Battin points out that suicide rates may not be an accurate reflection of attitudes. (NBB)
