The authors present findings from a comparison of 15 studies designed to investigate the natural history of suicidal behavior & the effectiveness of treatment in dealing with it. Areas & methods reviewed deal with effectiveness of treatment, adequacy of follow up, randomized clinical trials, prospective analytic surveys, & before & after studies. Only 3 studies reported a decrease in repetition of attempted suicide attributed to treatment intervention. Other findings are summarized.
