Mood pain refers to those experiences of depressed persons comparable to the physical pain of injury or illness. The authors interviewed 30 depressed psychiatric inpatients, who had previously experienced severe physical pain. They asked the patients to compare the pain of depression with the physical pain to indicate which might be preferable should either be re-experienced. Results indicated that the depression was more painful than the physical pain. Implications are discussed. 29ref. (NBB)
