Clinicians attribute self destructive behavior to depression & often administer antidepressants & prescribe psychotherapy. The author suggests that antipsychotic medications might control the behvior & reduce the likelihood of potential lethality. Once the psychotic component is sufficiently arrested & suicidal behavior is controlled, the patient may be more amendable to intensive diagnostic assessment & eventually to psychotherapy. 17 ref.
