Current knowledge about bereavement is reviewed. It is noted that knowledge & understanding of grief & its consequences have grown rapidly in importance to psychiatry. The psychiatric conditions that follow bereavement are discussed in terms of three common patterns: the unexpected grief syndrome; the ambivalent grief syndrome; and chronic grief. The prevention of pathalogical reactions is outlined. The treatment of pathological grief is briefly discussed. (NBB)
