In a retrospective study of 277 adult patients hospitalized for burns over a 5 year period (1975-1979), the most common predisposing factors were alcohol & drug abuse, physical & mental illness & advanced age. Two mentally ill women set themselves on fire, a 31 year old schizophrenic female attempted suicide while in hospital & one depressed female with a history of alcohol abuse, living alone, attempted suicide at home. 17 refs.
