The authors discuss perspectives on correlations between unemployment & mental health in the Federal Republic of Germany, noting that unemployment did not become a topic of social research in the FRG until the mid 1970’s. Social integration & a stable financial situation are protective factors for the unemployed. The relationship between true mental disorders & frequency of suicide over time in the FRG is examined. 25 refs.
