The author states that depressives initially have difficulty in communicating with others in group psychotherapy. As they progress through the stages of group therapy (explorative contracts, regression, catharsis, insight and social learning) activation of suicidal impulses may occur. Battegay prefers to treat severely depressed patients in homogeneous groups where detection of such tendencies are more likely to occur. (NBB) 15 refs.
