Comments on an article by W. T. Martin on religiosity and suicide rates in the U.S that provided support for the idea that religiosity deters suicide. It is argued that Martin’s data do not allow him to draw the conclusions that he offered in his article. A correlational study does not allow for cause and effect conclusions, and the use of group data precludes conclusions about individual cases. 2 ref.
