The authors discuss the available literature on platelet MAO activity in both normal, healthy individuals & in patients with a variety of psychiatric illnesses; the evidence for a link between platelet MAO activity & central sertoninergic turnover; & the usefulness of monitoring the activity of platelet MAO in relation to antidepressant & other therapeutic treatments. Studies of depressive disorders & suicidal behavior are examined. 216 ref.
