This study reviews all suicides occurring in a state hospital from 1916-1958. 62% were male; the mean age was 40.9 for males, 46.7 for females; 92% had been involuntarily committed; 45% were schizophrenic; 83% were clinically depressed; 62% committed suicide within 6 months of admission; 50% had made previous attempts; in 54%, the patient’s psychiatric status was progessively deteriorating; 50% occurred in isolation rooms; 90% were from hanging or strangulation.
