This paper discusses the relationship between substance abuse & suicidal behavior. Family systems models of suicide & chemical dependency are reviewed & intervention into the suicidal crisis of substance abusing families is discussed. The goals of crisis intervention with suicidal alcohol/drug (SAD) families are identified. They include treatment for the dependent in treatment of chemical dependency & engaging the family in recovery from co-dependency while remaining safe from suicide. 73 refs
