This prospective study of Indian mortality was carried out during the period Sep. 1976- Sep. 1977, & involved 9 Indian & Metis constituencies in Alberta. Data was collected on 163 deaths of persons of native Indian origin. 72% were treaty Indians, mostly from the Blood, Samson, & Blackfoot bands. 62% were males, & the average age at death was much younger than the white population. 11.3% of all deaths were suicides. 7 of the 17 suicides had made previous attempts.
