The authors conducted a 12-month study of attempted suicide by drug overdose, beginning September 1980. A total of 205 admissions were recorded. There were 14 deaths. The drugs used by these patients were compared with those used in a previous study in 1971. In both, benzodiaepines were most commonly used; however, the 80-81 study indicated an increase in usage of paracetamol. Caution is advised in prescribing these drugs, particularly to those with a psychiatric history. (NBB)
