Dr. Kiev states that the most critical variable in self-destructive behavior is the attitude of the patients’s significant others. A suicide attempt may represent the patient’s rage response to those who deny either his psychological pain or his illness. It is important to intervene with the family to discourage them from minimizing the patient’s condition. Treatment focus should move from drugs & psychotherapy to social therapy where the provision of a supportive environment is emphasized.
