This article reports on the meanings & experiences of suicidal behaviors in a general population. Respondents (n=679) were adults who resided in a large urban community in western Canada. Reports of suicidal ideation & suicidal actions were much higher than reported in previous studies. Stress due to marked drop of income, the Beck Hopelessness Scale & history of suicidal behavior in a family member were strongly associated with suicidal ideas, but not actions. Other findings are discussed.
