The Risk of Suicide in Young Psychiatric Patients Hospitalized Out-of-State

As more state hospital systems “deinstitutionalize” & more private hospitals concentrate on short-term treatment, a recommendation for long-term hospital treatment is coming to mean, in most areas of the country, a referral to an institution far from the patient’s home. The deaths of 2 out-of-state patients by suicide in one long-term institution led to an investigation of the possible connection between suicide & hospitalization at a distance far from home. 18 ref.
