SAFER, a program founded to assist those who attempt or threaten suicide, has been in operation in Vancouver since 1972. It is staffed by professional care givers & receives referrals from 4 hospital emergency departments. The role of SAFER in crisis intervention, bereavement counselling, & public education is discussed.
