Efforts to develop patient profiles predicting future suicide fall prey to an inexorable constraint in the statistical properties of rare events: they identify unacceptably large numbers of false positives. Clinical recognition of persons at increased risk of suicide is nevertheless feasible. Through appropriate diagnosis & treatment, suicide prevention is possible.
