“Focal psychotherapy” is the exploration & working through of a focal conflict which has been precipitated by a recent event which has overwhelmed the patient’s usual defense mechanisms. A case history using this type of therapy is followed through the engagement phase, middle & terminal phases. A follow-up interview revealed the patient had become more flexible in coping with his affect states including those that arose in close interpersonal interactions.
