A psychiatrist & former pharmacist suggests intervention techniques that can be used by the pharmacist in assessing a potentially suicidal customer. It would not be inappropriate, states Dr. Asnis, to discreetly inquire of an obviously distressed person if his doctor is aware of how he is feeling or to refuse to dispense prescriptions until he has discussed the matter with the patient’s doctor.
