The authors present the history of a boy, first hospitalized for treatment of major depression at age 12 1/2, who had made a single suicide attempt at age 7. Family & individual psychodynamics, psychopathology & treatment are discussed. The influence of meaningful stressful life events on his motivation to attempt suicide is noted.
