Because suicide is a problem that should be anticipated in an oncological clinical practice, the many facets of suicide in the cancer situation, its incidence, its assessment, & its prevention are explored. A study done of suicide cases within the Veterans Administration in 1963 that gives clues as to which cancer patients are at particularly high risk is examined in detail. Nursing interventions which can be used by clinicans, such as counselling & crisis intervention methods, are presented.
