A study of 258 attempted suicides presenting themselves to the Yale New Haven Hospital E.R. revealed that most attempts were by pill overdose. A comparison of attempt methods revealed that those who attempted suicide by pill ingestion were the most impulsive, had the least intent to kill & were motivated towards obtaining attention from significant others. Attempts by violent methods (N=53) such as wrist-cutting, shooting or hanging were most planned & had higher intent to kill. (NBB)
