Self-destructive behavior is an acute social problem in Northwest Alaska. In particular, the Alaskan Native suicide rate in the NANA region is more than seven times the national average. Alienation, loss of family, low income, alcohol abuse, high unemployment & more education are shown to be factors related to suicidal behavior.
