Hospitalization has been used almost exclusively as the treatment for the suicidal risk client. However, questions about the appropriateness of this action have arisen: hospitalization removes the patient from the environment but does nothing to change the environment that may have caused the hospitalization; a stigma follows the hospitalized patient; the client’s family may not receive information to assist the client on discharge. Recommendations are made for expansion of hospital care. NBB
