The author states that those who attempt or commit suicide are often people whose lives are already filled with “deadening experiences”–drinking, drugs, or outward activities like parties, busy work, sexual activity, involvement in a cause, helping others–in order to avoid emotions, they grew up feeling their parents would not like them to have: anger, sexual feelings, unhappiness or “not having reasons”.
