The case history of a 52-year-old female who attempted suicide by ingesting 60-80 mL of 50% formic acid (kettle descaler) is presented. Biomedical treatment used during the course of her recovery is described in detail. The authors conclude careful monitoring & early intervention in any metabolic abnormalities that arise with augmentation of urine output may reduce the mortality from this serious but rare form of poisoning.
