In this controlled study, 862 high risk hospitalized persons refusing follow up care were divided into 2 groups: One group was contacted at certain intervals for 5 years; the control group was not contacted. Results indicated a statistically significant lower rate of suicide in the contact group during the first 2 years; thereafter the rates for both groups converged. Reasons for this convergence are discussed.(NBB)
