The rate of suicide in Hungary has increased markedly in the last two decades. The rate has risen steadily from 26 per 100,000 in 1960 to 44.9 in 1980. The causative factors are difficult to identify due to lack of suicide research and the prevailing attitude that the subject of suicide is taboo. Possible cultural, social & psychological determinants are discussed.(NBB)
