The author states that the school counselor must use active listening skills to identify suicidal ideation in troubled students. Ideally a network of concerned faculty & staff could refer potentially self destructive youths to the counselor if they were trained to identify situational clues such as depression, expressions of hopelessness & helplessness or loss. The author also suggests 10 questions that should be asked during the student interview that would aid the counselor in assessment.(NBB)
