For the period 1968 to 1982, high correlation was found between unemployment & attempted suicide. Throughout this period suicide among the unemployed was more than 10 times higher than among the employed. Findings were consistent with the view that unemployment, especially if long term, increases the incidence of attempted suicide.(NBB)
