Swensen describes a general model within which various techniques of counseling & psychotherapy may be integrated. This model is based on Lewinis theory that behavior is a function of the person & the enviroment. Ego development progresses in stages & is characterized by a particular way of perceiving, interpreting, & reacting to the people, objects, & events in the enviroment. Therapy is geared to the stage presently mastered by the client. In a related article, Loevinger comments on Swensen.
